The online store is the dream. In half the cases a simple site with a good WhatsApp button sells more, and costs three times less.
The question almost always arrives the same way: “I want to sell online.” And almost always, twenty minutes into the conversation, it turns out something else is needed. Here is how to decide for yourself.
What a business website does
It shows who you are, what you sell, where you are and how to reach you. The customer writes, you talk, you close. That is exactly how most products sell in Cameroon: people want to see, to ask, to negotiate.
A good business website is not a brochure. It has product pages with prices, photos and descriptions — and a button that opens WhatsApp with the product name already in the message.
What an online store does
It adds the basket, the stock, the order, delivery and sometimes payment. In other words it automates what you do by hand today. That is worth it when doing it by hand costs you too much time or too many mistakes.
The three questions that decide
How many orders a day? Below ten or so, a WhatsApp conversation is faster than a basket and costs infinitely less to build. Above that, you lose track and the store starts to pay for itself.
Are your prices fixed? If you negotiate, if you do wholesale prices, if delivery depends on the neighbourhood, an automatic basket will get in your way more than it helps.
Is your stock up to date? A store showing “in stock” for a sold-out item does more harm than a page with no store at all. If nobody tracks stock today, the store is not the first job — the management software is.
The path that works best
In most cases we see, this is the order that makes money:
- A business site with a real catalogue and a WhatsApp button per product. Fast to build, inexpensive, working straight away.
- WhatsApp Business set up properly: catalogue, quick replies, away message, direct link.
- The full store once the volume justifies it — and by then it is built on habits that already exist, not on a hunch.
Jumping straight to step 3 happens often. It is also where we see the most stores abandoned after six months.
What about online payment?
It plugs in when you want it and does not change the nature of the site. Our stores ship ready to receive it. Many of our clients switch it on a year later, once enough orders come from far away to make it worthwhile. Until then, mobile money and cash on delivery cover most of it.
What to remember
An online store is not a higher grade of business website: it is a different tool for a different problem. If your problem is “nobody finds me”, it is a website and visibility work. If your problem is “I can no longer keep up with orders”, it is a store — or management software.
Tell us what is jamming today and we will tell you which of the two fixes it. Even if the answer is “neither”.
